Portable City Projects

Krzysztof Wodiczko

Like the work of Krzysztof Wodiczko, an artist who has also developed ‘instruments' to facilitate survival, communication, and healing, for homeless people and immigrants. These therapeutic devices, which Wodiczko envisions as technological prosthetics or tools for empowering and extending human abilities, address physical disability as well as economic hardship, emotional trauma, and psychological distress.

Like Krzysztof Wodiczko's "instruments", once activated, the Portable City mediates silence through the creation of a convivial social space. The "mobile kit" and it's contents become instruments through which to engage people in conversation and exchange.

Krzysztof Wodiczko's "instruments" are also performances or interventions in civic space and the devices he creates seek to unearth issues that exist within the public sphere.

Portable City has a similar goal to mediate interaction and discover complexity.
